Album Review

This CD is one nonstop party loaded with the tunes that got the group (to the amazement of many) into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: "Mothership Connection," "Chocolate City," "Flashlight," "Dr. Funkenstein," and "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker." If you don't want to collect every Parliarment album and CD ever released, Get Funked Up offers a good one-shot representation of the outrageous group conceived by George Clinton. These are the funk group's sides, not the soul/R&B early rendition that recorded on Revilot, Golden World, and other labels. This is the P-Funk: heavy bass bombs, at times ghostly vocals, dope lyrics -- music inspired by an array of (at the time) designer drugs. Officially, Parliament was George Clinton, Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon, Grady Thomas, and Ray Davis, but members of their band Funkadelic will tell you that, on most of these cuts, only Clinton and Funkadelic were present at the sessions; the other guys were usually back in Plainfield, NJ, kickin' and chillin'.
