Album Review

The first in Volume's series of electronic compilations is a near-essential collection representing virtually every major name in the emerging listening-techno scene, most represented with exclusive tracks or remixes. Across two discs, the cream of British and German techno -- Orbital, Bandulu, System 7, Black Dog, Spooky, Cosmic Baby, CJ Bolland, the Source, Aphex Twin, the Orb, the Drum Club, Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia, Sabres of Paradise -- contribute excellent material, and are introduced to the mainstream via extensive interviews and pictures. In most cases, these were the first features ever done on these artists, and the set is of much interest historically as well as musically. It's simply one of the most effective documents of early-'90s ambient techno.
